Palenque Day Excursion
Meet your guide at your hotel for what will be an impactful day. You’ll touring San Basilio de Palenque, a small village outside of Cartagena. Named one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, Palenque is the home of the first free Africans in the Americas. The community speaks its own language and has retained its African identity and traditions after several Africans escaped the slave trade run by the Spaniards in the 16th Century and founded a small army which later conquered this area. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted in the local Palenquero language at the main square. Afterwards, you’ll head to the Knowledge Center and learn about the Palenquero culture and traditions. From there, you’ll have a chance to walk around the town with a local Palenquero guide. At lunchtime, you’ll enjoy a traditional wood-fired meal. Medellín Transformation Tour
We’ll pick you up and head over to the city´s civic center where we’ll begin an exploration of Medellín and its history, starting from the industrial revolution to the dark days of the 80’s and 90’s. This tour focuses on the importance of architecture and transit here and the roles they -- as well as the LGBTQ community -- have played in transforming Medellín into one of the world’s most promising and innovative cities. You’ll walk through the brilliant Parque de las Luces and Parque Berrio/Plaza Botero, and visit the Museum of Antioquia, which is full of sculptures, paintings, and drawings donated by Botero to his home city. As you continue, you’ll be able to browse traditional handicrafts and souvenirs at a local market, and pass flower-lined streets and parks. Before enjoying a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll have the option to visit the government-funded LGBTQ community center for a quick tour of the facility, if available. In the afternoon, you’ll get to know Medellin’s violent past, understand its bright present and promising future as you tour the infamous Comuna 13. This was the most dangerous barrio in what was then the most dangerous city in the world. There you’ll interact with the community, learn how community members used graffiti to tell their stories, and witness firsthand how public projects. like the electronic escalators on the mountainside, helped transform the neighborhood. There is an option for a longer, 8-hour tour, which can include a visit to the House of Memory Museum, which recognizes the victims of the city’s armed conflict of the last 50 years. Be sure to ask about this impactful option!

Drink & Dance Tour
One of the best ways to understand the city and people of Cartagena is through how they spend their past-time - in this case what they drink and the music they listen and dance to. This tour takes you on a voyage through 4 different musical styles: Folkloric (such as mápele and cumbia), Vallenato, Salsa and Champeta. We will learn about the origins of the different styles and their associated dances and share fun anecdotes that help understand their importance to Cartagena. You will have the opportunity to learn basic steps in each dance. To accompany each genre, we will also have a different drink typical to Cartagena; colombian coffee (tinto), Colombian Aguardiente, Colombian rum and a local beer. Each drink has its own story and has earned its place in Colombian daily life and legend.
